On the activity day, every group was assigned to go out and research on topics related to food safety in China including farm, supermarkets, restaurants, household, etc. And our group had an opportunity to visit one of organic farm in Shanghai to interview and gather information from the beginning process of food production.
Background
Since 2003, there was rapid demand growth for organic food in the West. Chinese farmers see a niche market worth cultivating. Many people are willing to pay extra for healthier and more environmentally friendly diet. Chinese farmers got pay 30 to 50 percent more for organic food. And in China, where farmers account for more than 70 percent of the population of 1.3 billion, organic growers are only a tiny minority.
started in 2004 and was called OStore, located in driving distance of 10 mins from Shanghai Pudong International Airport. BIOFarm believed to improve soil through organic methods, combating all kinds of challenges of nature, growing non GM vegetables out of an uncontaminated land without using any chemical pesticides/fertilizers or growth hormones. BIOFarm applied a biodynamic (advanced organic) farming method to grow almost 120 different species of vegetables. Biodynamic farming follows a natural rhythm to optimize the timing of planting, growing and harvesting vegetables.
In addition to organic vegetables, BIOFarm is proud to offer 18 different species of organic sprouts, which are the first certified sprouts in China under BIOFarm’s R&D program. A favorite of chefs, these organic sprouts are routinely supplied to Shanghai’s world class restaurants, along with various edible flowers and organic micro-vegetables.
